Billy Lockett has won hearts and minds with his EP Old Man; the collection of songs entered the top 40 iTunes album chart last year, making Billy the only self-released artist to reach the top 100 that week.
‘Never Let You Go’ is the second single to be released from the grand EP, giving it the recognition it deserves as a song in its own right. The song tells the confessional story of a man asking for forgiveness, desperately clinging on to his love and doing anything to win her back. The sorry tale crawls under your skin with Billy Lockett’s emotive voice, exposing you to a vulnerability that is difficult to ignore.
The music video is a dark affair, as we watch unknown hands cling on to a girl who has no power to stop it. It feels invasive and uncomfortable. The chorus leads us to a naked torso – presumably the same girl we saw earlier – with “Never Let You Go” written just below her breasts. The invasive hands are back, wiping out the words until there’s nothing but illegible smudges marking her pale skin. Amongst all this we see Billy Lockett himself, staring at the camera, with tears in his eyes.
You’ll be haunted by this track long after the video is over.
