Lawrence English has now devoted nearly 25 years to exploring sound as an idea, as a physical thing, as an experience and as a phenomenon. A theorist, writer, artist, curator and composer, to simply say he’s prolific minimises the constant discovery all his work communicates. Plus the music, from himself and others, released on the label he’s guided throughout this time, Room40, represents an ever- evolving sonic document of the experimental, ambient and electronic- so really kind of seminal.
What’s trying to be said here is that the announcement of a new Lawrence English album has leverage which is more than justified. Within the leftfield this is some event, especially as it will mark a quarter of a century of Room40 activity. Fittingly released through that very portal, ‘Even The Horizon Knows Its Bounds’ will nestle on the shelves from 31st January 2025.
What to expect then? More deep listening required? Perhaps another dive into the darker web of ambience? Well in English’s words the new music reflects how “sound haunts architecture”. Such complex connections are probably best considered when immersed in ‘Even The Horizon Knows Its Bounds’ in full. For now though some keynotes: the music has grown from a sound installation by English at the NSW Gallery of Art; it involves collaborations between English and fellow luminaries Claire Rousay, Chris Abrahams, Jim O’Rourke and more; and the journey will be appropriately long form.
If that’s not enough to spark your intrigue and curiosity, the introductory preview should tip the balance. ‘Even The Horizon Knows Its Bounds (Excerpt II)’ has subtlety, delicacy but a sense of huge scale. Symphonic drones merge harmonically and float in suspension while a searching piano rescues fragments of melody. Miniscule suggestions can sometimes be heard, a bass rumble, a horn, a synth flutter. The atmosphere is urban and viewed from above, a repeated low piano note ending the excerpt, balanced finely on the edge and leaving the listener poised for more.
