Gliding in on a gentle breeze of nu-soul positivity and glistening down-tempo, ‘How Do You Feel ?’, the new single from DJ/producer Submyth and synth-pop songster Frankie Knight, answers that question itself. Here is music that’s looking to calm but also to question. A fine blend then, which balances the lush and loose in a Brainfeeder way but without over complication. ‘How Do You Feel?’ sways elegantly, all retro finger snaps and the softest of bass pads, rippling keys and a whirly synth hook plus Frankie Knight’s relaxed but reflective vocals. It’s a voice that subtly adds depth to the song, suggesting ‘we need to start again’ with an aching undertone as well as more than a little hope.
The singer has been a friend of Robert Swaine AKA Submyth since childhood and that connection has always been a base for much of their music making. Swaine was there ten years ago adding touches to Knight’s very first EP ‘Wade’ and also co-produced her 2019 attention grabbing album ‘Blue Marble’ which pulled in support from Radio 6. Now this year, the partnership is pushing on with a new flow that merges Knight’s lyrical dream wave consciousness with Swaine/Submyth’s dance grooves. So after much mutual support and collaboration ‘How Do You Feel ?’ is quirkily the duo’s first ‘official’ release but on this showing it’s looking unlikely to be a one-off.
