Don’t you just love labels that do things differently? LA’s Colorfield Records are on a mission driven by the search for spontaneity, coaxing consummate musicians from session and backing bands to step out of the shadows themselves and record their own music. Plus to add more energy to the proceedings, the debutants are encouraged to take even more risks, composing in the studio and expanding their soundscape using instruments that take them outside their natural comfort zone.
Step up guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Amir Yaghmai, the latest artist to throw himself into Colorfield’s care and spin with their unconventional approach. Despite coming with hefty credentials, working with Nosaj Thing, Feist and Julian Casablancas’ band The Voidz, Yaghmai admits that his doubts weren’t far from the surface at the outset. Then he locked into a mindset that reminded him ’… just to play and not overthink. Just hit the studio and hammer out something; the rest will reveal itself’.
His leap of faith was worth it and soon the wild alchemy of those studio sessions will be revealed with his debut solo album ‘Go Bozo’, available on Colorfield Records from 28th October. With a promise of an agile mix of synth woven songs, experimental foundations, jazz tinges and traditional Middle Eastern/ African undertones, the indications are that this record will generate its own energy.
The album’s first single ‘White Turtleneck’ (streaming now via all the usual suspects and also featuring Feist) clearly reinforces that impression. Gothic synth patterns, a priestly vocal, electronic chimes hovering around the tunes high vaults, there’s an atmosphere of magic and mystique all captured in a tingling three minutes.
It’s beginning to feel like Amir Yaghmai’s ‘Go Bozo’ ironically, given the title, will be anything but shallow. This is the sound of some significance coming our way.
