Melbourne’s legendary Underground Lovers have released a new single, ‘Seven Day Weekend’ as well as announcing the release of their tenth album ‘A Left Turn’ on 11 October 2019 along with a tour of Australia. I’m unashamedly a massive fan of this criminally underrated band and it feels like Christmas.
‘Seven Day Weekend’ is a smashing blast of a track underpinned by the extraordinarily blistering and melodic bass line by Maurice Argiro. The song features the very unique Undies style of Glen Bennie’s angular, raw guitar melding with an electronic heartbeat: pure indie pop with a vibrant spine.
Vincent Giarrusso’s vocals have a swagger and a brashness that bely an almost naive yet joyous ode to friendship and the workers:
Pure pulse-quickening joy. It is incredible to think this band has been around thirty years (although with a brief hiatus) and, like their compatriots The Go-Betweens, they deserve a far greater commercial success given their critical acclaim and inestimable contribution to the shoegaze/dream pop genre.
The Undies are on tour across Australia in November to promote the album and you can catch them here, supported a few times by another legendary band The Lovetones:
