Welsh singer-songwriter Tom Emlyn releases the warming and nostalgic new single ‘Double-Crossed’. Taken from the upcoming album Rehearsal For The Rain: Scaredycat, Vol.2, the track showcases the vintage aura and emotive sincerity which characterises the solo artists sound.
‘Whimsical, melancholic and atmospheric, the track uses it’s boxy, vintage recording approach to great effect with a lo-fi analogue sound which makes great use of bounce-back delay, to create a Beatles-esque soundscape. Topped with the gentle, emotive lead vocal, the tracks lyrics explore self-reflection in a reflective, honest account of feelings as understated muted drums, plucky bass and rich guitar tones dance around the soundscape.
As the track progresses and a bright lead guitar wobbling with heavy modulation enters, the track builds to a still understated yet euphoric climax with layers of saxophone. The video for ‘Double-Crossed,’ created by Sam Ffoto, consists of rapidly taken photographs that simulate film. Shot on a cold January day in Cathays Cemetery, Cardiff, the video acts as a adds a layer of visual intrigue.
Rehearsal For The Rain: Scaredycat, Vol.2 marks Emlyn’s fourth solo album in two years, highlighting his prolific creativity. The album will be available digitally and on cassette, with a launch show at The Moon, Cardiff on August 29th. The new single ‘Double-Crossed’ is out now.
