The Soft Pink Truth is the solo moniker of Drew Daniel of Matmos, and he has a new album out on May 1st titled ‘Shall we go on sinning so that Grace may increase?’. Ahead of the albums release, Daniel has shared the records first single, ‘We’. The album itself is one long track, so in effect ‘We’ is an excerpt rather than a ‘song’ in the traditional meaning. The album/piece was written as a reaction to the growing rise of fascism around the globe and takes on board elements of dance, electronic and minimalist music. On the record, Daniel says, “The election of Donald Trump made me feel very angry and sad, but I didn’t want to make “angry white guy” music in a purely reactive mode. I felt that I needed to make music through a different process, and to a different emotional outcome, to get past a private feeling of powerlessness by making musical connections with friends and people I admire, to make something that felt socially extended and affirming.”
Full of woozy electronica and stuttering smoky vocals, We is wonky yet rather lovely, and as it unfurls it becomes much more dance floor friendly, as it becomes a warm house cut. Check it out, here
