The Golden Dregs continue to emit gilded rays of pleasure for our ears with the new single ‘Before We Fell From Grace’. The Golden Dregs is the creative outlet for Benjamin Woods and the new track eases out the usual ethereal, profound delicate entrails of sounds that wrap around Wood’s extraordinary vocals: deep, sonorous, whispered vignettes that slowly dissolve into your consciousness and curl up for an eternity.
Woods writes melodies and tells stories that are fragile, subtle and opaque, ethereal and mysterious. The lyrics are achingly beautiful and have a spiritual presence:
Louder than before we hear the whistle blow.
Was it for us to hear? I’d rather not know.
Isn’t it bliss here?
Just skimming rocks in eden. Oh what could become.
A saxophone breath adds a luster to the tone and layers of sounds rumble with a quiet intensity throughout.
The accompanying video directed by Joe Wheatley has a Brueghelian tone: studied, enigmatic and profoundly immersive:
The track is off The Golden Dregs forthcoming album ‘On Grace and Dignity’ out on 10 February out through 4AD and Remote Control Records and available to pre-save here.
