NYC’s The Dayoffs actually have their roots a little further afield. The duo, Vladimir Komarov and Atsuo Matsumoto hail from Russia and Japan, and met as producers while working on other artists’ output. Seemingly continuously working on other people’s music, they recorded some instrumental improvisations during studio downtime, gathering enough material for a debut LP. Hence, their name The Dayoffs – from constant lack of studio time for their own music.
Taken from it, comes the infectious indie pop of ‘Two Actors in a Cage’. Carefully treading northwards of twee (not that there’s anything wrong with twee) but south of middle of the road, it’s driven by this insistently catchy melody, alongside synths and jangly guitars. Resist at your peril.
