T.G. Shand is the moniker of Ōtautahi/Christchurch resident Annemarie Duff, formerly of the legendary Melbourne shoegaze band Miniatures (on the iconic Saint Marie Records label) and she returns with her first single of 2024, the shimmering ‘Cheese’.
There is a more muscular drive to the new single – a dark majestic pop element that results in an ethereal sound that is almost menacing. Duff’s vocals are as enchanting as ever – a slight distance, an Antarctic chill but as soft as silk. The instrumentation is layered and magical – glittering like celestial objects in the sky.
The song is a poem about that feeling when someone or a situation seems suspiciously good but there’s an unease surrounding it.
The result is something maintains T’G’ Shand’s unerring ability to create the most wondrous sonic architecture:
‘Cheese’ is out now and available to download and stream here.
The band is also booked to open for Blonde Redhead when they tour New Zealand in June.
