IT’S BEEN days, mere days, since Will Dorey, the quiet, guitar-playing minor genius behind Skinshape, dropped his last single, Arrogance Is The Death Of Men – a sun-blissed shuffle, languid on the surface but with an angry, conscious current of lyricism about where we’re at underneath.
But then, it’s been a busy year creatively for Skinshape; it’s only been four months since the fine Anglo-Afro interweaving of his last album, Umoja, hit the racks, and he’s back with his next; titled as for the last single; another spin of the wheel, back towards the laidback, cinemascope downbeats of 2018’s Filoxiny.
If you’re an aficionado of that Skinshape sparkle, new single “Another Day”, already a fan’s favourite, so won’t disappoint; that bright guitar counterpoints the fluid hush of Will’s voice. Have a listen. There’s a softly elegiac feel as he sings: “Another day that I’m alright / Another day that I’m alive.” Taken in conjunction with the first single, it looks like it’s gonna be a gentle heart-stealer of an album.
Skinshape’s Arrogance Is The Death Of Men will be released by Lewis Recordings on digital download, CD, trad black and clear vinyl on December 4th, and is available to pre-order now over at Bandcamp.
