Sappho the solo venture of Phoebe Baker who was formerly the vocalist for the group Alpine has just released her new track ‘Scared Angel’ via Ivy League Records. Baker initiated the Sappho project in 2018 and burst onto the scene in 2021 with her debut single ‘Flex’. ‘Scared Angel’ is off Sappho’s upcoming self-titled EP which will be available on 29 July.
‘Scared Angel’ builds on Sappho’s reputation for producing hooky, irresistible pop. The song kicks off with a roaring siren, which is quickly usurped by a funky beat that is deliciously beguiling and somehow belies Sappho’s pleas on the song that she is “not a bad girl”. Midway through the song Sappho breaks into a brief rap and there is no choice, dear listener but to submit to the groove.
“I wanted to sing a song that was about not being a “bad girl” … which so many songs are about. Yes, sometimes I have my bad girl days, don’t get me wrong… I have a penchant for the accelerator pedal and revealing tops…but on the average day, I’m just…a scared angel. Writing this felt powerful and ridiculous, and sometimes that is just the sensation you are looking for when behind the mic”.
