Producer and Worldwide FM host Sampology has shared his uptempo new track Reassemble, featuring the soulful vocals of Berlin-based singer James Chatburn. Continuing the live instrumentation from Memories in Flight and Suffer and Swim, ‘Reassemble’ features lush strings, woodwind, xylophone and warm percussion, combined with James Chatburn’s powerful voice.
Following a session between the two musicians in Berlin, the song travelled back to Brisbane with Sam where he transformed it into a beautiful and pulsating soundscape, reminiscent of a dream sequence with its swelling orchestral elements. Following support on tracks from BBC 1xtra, BBC 6, FBi Radio, KCRW, PBSFM and triple j, Sampology will also release his long-awaited LP Regrowth on 3 September.
Australian native James Chatburn is no stranger to the scene – his musical expertise has lead to releases on Majestic Casual and Soulection, touring with Jordan Rakei and The Internet, plus collaborating with Hilltop Hoods on their Gold single ‘Higher’. On the collaboration, James shares: ‘Sam and I met in Berlin after he came here for a gig, we basically made a rough sketch of what turned into this song. Over the next couple of months every time we would chat he would have added this crazy shit to the arrangement. I was just there for one day but I love what Sam turned the song into’.
The ‘Reassemble’ official video features digitised footage from Sampology’s grandfather’s 70s and 80s super8 film tapes, showing travels throughout China, New Zealand and Norfolk Island, as well as Super 8 film recordings from Sampology’s own travels and studio sessions.
“I distinctly recall walking the streets of Kreuzberg after the session with James Chatburn. He brought so much life and strong melodic value to the song. That melody was rolling through my head walking the streets and I could not escape the desire for it to evolve into a lush, classic, orchestral Disney-styled emotional creature.” -Sampology
The forthcoming Regrowth LP is an album Sampology’s last two EPs have built towards. The majority of Regrowth was written and recorded during the Australian bushfires in the summer of 2019, and the album’s title came from reflecting on the environment during this time.
The Brisbane music-maker started honing his craft aged 17, evolving to interstate and eventually overseas travel as a DJ, performing in Europe and the UK, America and Asia. Over the past six years he has made the organic transition to producer – of his own stunning EP releases Natural Selections (2016) and Mt Glorious (2018), as well as producing Tiana Khasi’s Meghalaya EP and First Beige’s ‘Mirrors’ EP. His reputation in the Brisbane music community led to an invitation by Gilles Peterson to join the Worldwide FM family in 2019. He has hosted a monthly show on the global station in the two years since.
For an artist who has been a vinyl enthusiast since his teens, also spending weekends singing in a cathedral choir and developing a love of sample-heavy music, it’s fair to say music constitutes a large part of Sampology’s make-up. He clearly has a natural ear for finding the perfect balance of elements to create wonderfully organic and vibrant arrangements.
