A permanent fixture here at the antipodean outpost of Backseat Mafia, the irrepressible YAGKI (the moniker of multi-talented Sarah Yagki) is back at a shimmering tilt with her new single ‘Run’.
Crystalline guitars provide a sparkling entry curtain as YAGKI’s dulcet tones enter, filled with a yearning delivery that positively explodes into an anthemic chorus with extra turbo-fueled power. As ever, there is a deeply personal element to YAGKI’s songwriting. She says of the track:
‘Run’ is about my sleep paralysis and night terrors. I wrote it in the perspective of myself at 16, during the peak of my sleep paralysis while I was homeless. While I was running, my sleep kept reminding me of where I had come from in bursts of shadows, knives and figures that I thought were real. My reality and dream became so blurred, and ‘Run’ is about living between feeling dead and alive.
The accompanying video is a close up performance piece that puts on display YAGKI’s enigmatic personality and passion:
‘Run’ is out now and available to download and stream via all the usual sites. It follows a string of stunning tracks leading up to an album due later this year. You can catch YAGKI live – details below.
