Rufus Wainwright has announced his brand new solo album ‘Unfollow The Rules’. The record will be Wainwright’s first pop album since 2012’s ‘Out of the Game’, and it’s set to be released on April 24 via BMG.
First single off the album “Damsel In Distress” is an ode to the wonderful Joni Mitchell, who Wainwright was introduced through his husband. “My husband and I now live in Laurel Canyon. I wasn’t that familiar with Joni’s music but Jörn became obsessed and took me on a journey into her music. We ended up hanging out with her and I get now why she’s one of the greats”.
Kicking off with some percussive almost muted guitar before drums, voice and harmonies fade in, “Damsel In Distress” becomes a wonderful folk pop tune. The structure and phrasing are pure Joni but that voice and flute and string accompaniment is all Rufus. This combination only shows what a master of songwriting he is.
