despite being best known as a successful film and television composer, Roly Witherow has moved the goalposts for his first solo release and recorded an album of traditional folk tunes. The album, Ballads and Yarns is out now and from it he’s released his version of Lord Franklin, perhaps best known in its Pentangle version.
There’s a bare and emotive quality to Witherow’s version, made up not much beyond an electric guitar , a tambourine and a drone, but his voice pulls you into the story and along with it. It’s quietly beautiful.
