Robert Baxter isn’t just stepping into their pop era—they’re tearing the doors off the hinges and strutting through in glossy, cinematic, hyper-digital glory. Announcing their new STARGIRL EP (out 11 April), the Naarm/Melbourne-via-Yorta Yorta Country/Shepparton artist, producer, ballroom performer, and all-around creative force has dropped ‘CAMBOY’, a slick and hauntingly danceable new single that dives headfirst into the murky waters of parasocial relationships and internet obsession.

With production from Lucy Blomkamp (6LACK, Becca Hatch, Ninajirachi), CAMBOY oscillates between sultry, glitchy electronics and frantic breakbeats, perfectly framing Baxter’s effortless, silk-spun vocals. It’s the sound of someone who understands the internet’s seductive power but also sees through the facade..

The accompanying video is a mood-heavy, flirtatious fever dream, directed by longtime collaborator Maxine Zanoni. VHS clips of Baxter’s friends as “camboys” flicker between hyper-digital and hyper-analogue worlds, reinforcing the song’s theme: the way we curate, distort, and obsess over elevated online selves.

“I have really really hot friends. I wrote this song with some of them in mind, fantasizing about being more than friends with them, or a time when I crushed on them before we became friends. So I asked them to come and star in my music video, it came out gorgeous and sexy and so free. I posted a teaser for the video and it has been sent around a lot – I even had a couple people ask me why I didn’t ask them to be in the video!” – Robert Baxter
