Amsterdam-based trio Rex have released an epic single ‘Palaces’ which has about it an exciting studied pose and swagger, and a video that captures this band’s cool presence.
Singer Jonathan Rex has that razor sharp feel and profound delivery that cannot help recall the likes of Leonard Cohen or Nick Cave – ultra cool yet emotive, an enigmatic presence. Of the single. Rex says:
The song embraces the sorrow of loss, and powerless felt when you lose someone close to you. It raises the questions of how to continue on with life and survive without them
There is a deep seated romanticism about the song and, indeed, the band, that is enthralling. The deep rumbling bass and backup singing add to beautifully expressed emotions that burn like a fuse, interspersed by prowling, howling guitar:
‘Palaces’ comes off a debut EP due out in May and is available through all the usual download/streaming sites.
Rex are:
Jonathan Rex – Vocals Guitar
Nout Kooij – Drums
