Track: Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets release thunderous single ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’ and announce extensive Australian and European tour dates

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have made themselves known in their vivid, exuberant careers as one of Perth’s finest exports and most inventive bands. With just enough breathing space after their fourth album ‘SHYGA! The Sunlight Mount’, they have returned with their new single ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’, a euphoric explosion of fuzz-laden guitars and intoxicating polyphony that takes their eccentric sound into heftier terrains.

From the get-go, the affixing riffage is reminiscent of Kyuss’ ‘Welcome to Sky Valley’. Gently phased textures intertwining with rhythmic propensity, with the added friction of frivolously distorted vocals that tease the listener with melodic anticipation. Every moment in its four-minute duration is uniquely preserved and emanated, as its structure is an enigmatic encapsulation of the multicoloured mind of songwriter Jack McEwan.

A vibrant and appealing animated video accompanies the release, made by Bristol-based animator Gina Tratt. Apprehending the anarchic landscape of the song, the clip is a colourfully moving canvas of volatility, a mischievous gaze into superfluous human nature at the hands of corporate and capitalist gains. A dark rudimentary message behind such a mind-altering music video. McEwan says of the track:

I wanted to write something a bit heavier, get back to the Sabbath roots and chug on a riff for yonks ‘til it hums like a Novocaine mantra. I wanted it to feel like it was constantly progressing, getting more chaotic with drones, swirling between dissonant layers and get the body jangling with a Tyson hook.

The lyrics weren’t intentionally meant to be dark; I’ve always liked to keep our music upbeat and positive but some days it felt like everything was blurring into one, waiting for life to resume into some sense of normality. But what is normal? Change is good, variety is the spice of life and from these weird times I can truly say I’ve never been happier. So, the Pisco of life continues, building with bulldozers, creating from rubble, chewing on bricks with a toothless optimism. It’s nice to feel rounded.”

‘Lava Lamp Pisco’ comes with the revelation of Psychedelic Porn Crumpet’s inevitable international tour, with the band set to bring their outrageous and peculiar live show to the UK and Europe in March and April 2022. These will be band’s first extensive tour since the global pandemic forced them out of venues and off the roads.

The progression of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets has been a spectacle. There are fewer bands that offer such harmonious intellect and richly flamboyant releases. ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’ sees the group yet again outdo themselves in arduous ways. It’s an eclectic arrangement of noise and fuzz that sees them raise the bar further out of reach, a menacing new single from a comprehensively eulogised band.
