‘How To Sail Your Ship 2077’ is the new single from Germany-based duo Norðir: a slow burning sparkling track that has a crystalline guitar riff and deep sonorous vocals that are enigmatic and Bowie-esque.
According to Viktor Norðir, the track is part of a wider project which,
…revolves around the concept of time traveling, so every song represents a different time in world history or in my personal life. In this song I travel to the the year 2077 and I meet my older self in my 80s, the last chapter of my life. The lyrics in this song are what my older self is telling me. This song was written during the (first) pandemic lockdown in Germany when I was confronted with the thoughts of impermanence, aging, and also the value of gratitude and being present.
Norðir creates a dreamy fugue in this track, filled with a sense of yearning and yet imbued with a certain element of optimism:
The greatest mistake you can make in life is continually fearing that you will make one.
It’s your choice to build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build theirs.
Never be afraid of storms for you are learning how to sail your ship
The overall architecture of the track reflects an ambient flow: there are no dramatic explosions or choruses but rather a subtle ebb and flow.
