Track: Nicolas Bougaïeff – Nexus

Listening to his new single Nexus, it’s easy to see why Berlin-based producer and artist Nicolas Bougaïeff describes the tracks on his album as being like “little open scores”. More specifically he describes Nexus – taken from the album out via Mute Records on 24th July as being “a crossroads from the old world to the new world…” He goes to explain that it’s a crossroad from the meaningless to the meaningful and from the personal to the collective, and that “the meaning I’m looking for is optimism and commitment and collaboration”.

Nexus has a darkness about it, the ominous bass and the deliciously wonky melody at the beginning giving it this sense of unease. As it develops and begins to unfurl, so it’s decorated by a beat ever increasing in intensity, as it passes over beats, moving from simple to compound, and giving the track this skittish and menacing feel.
