Track & News: Spacey Jane Announce Third Album, Massive Aus/NZ Tour and Release Brand New Single ‘How To Kill Houseplants’

Spacey Jane are back with album number three, ‘If That Makes Sense‘ (out May 9), and they’re celebrating the best way they know how, by hitting the road for a massive Australian and New Zealand tour. To go with the announcement, they’ve also dropped their latest single, ‘How to Kill Houseplants‘, a melancholic, ‘80s-hued anthem about love, loss, and, well, the slow demise of a creeping ivy.

In classic Spacey Jane style, it’s introspective but wrapped in shimmering indie rock, this time with a touch of nostalgic synth. “I feel awful and I want to save this thing and I don’t know how to do it”, frontman Caleb Harper explains. Whether he’s talking about relationships or actual houseplants is up for debate, but either way, it’s another sharp, emotionally charged singalong.

It’s the second taste of ‘If That Makes Sense’, following ‘All the Noise‘, which has already drawn praise for its anthemic urgency and unflinching honesty. With Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, Wolf Alice) on production and contributions from Jackson “Day Wave” Phillips and songwriting powerhouse Sarah Aarons (Childish Gambino, Miley Cyrus, Lykke Li), the album promises to dig deep into love, trauma, and starting over.

To launch it, they’re embarking on their biggest tour yet, starting in Wellington on May 27 before winding through Aotearoa/New Zealand. The Australian leg kicks off in Meanjin/Brisbane on June 4, making stops in every capital city and a handful of regional venues before wrapping up with a homecoming residency in Boorloo/Perth. The Moving Stills and Phoebe Go will be along for the ride, with extra local openers set to join for the Perth shows.

It’s a fitting next step for a band that’s shot from local favourites to festival headliners in no time. From ‘Sunlight’ (2020) and its ARIA-winning breakout ‘Booster Seat’ to 2022’s ‘Here Comes Everybody’ (which landed straight at #1 on the ARIA charts), Spacey Jane have built their world on raw, open-hearted storytelling and indie rock anthems designed to be belted out in a crowd. ‘If That Makes Sense’ will keep that keen spirit alive. Houseplants not required, but emotional investment pretty much guaranteed.
