Ōtautahi/Christchurch resident Annemarie Duff, formerly of the legendary Melbourne shoegaze band Miniatures (on the iconic Saint Marie Records label) is T.G. Shand: the producer of some of the most dreamy velvet textured shoegaze dream pop this year through her singles ‘Lemony‘ and ‘The Ease‘. And with the hint of an album coming out in the new year, Duff is gracing our sonic world with a new sugar sweet delight, the single ‘Seats’, as a parting gift for a tumultuous year.
Duff says the track is:
…about being annoyed at karma for not doing its job with certain people. Getting what they want works for them and all that.
There is a poetic opaqueness to the lyrics:
Calm inspiration
Karma’s so good about you
Drive and a side shot
Good about you
Drama the side show
Karma’s so good about it
Drive and a side shot
Good about you
The darker message is sublimated by the beautiful delivery. Shimmering guitars splash against a roaming, muscular bass and insistent drums while Duff’s velvet coated vocals are distant, soft and floating – carrying the most spine-tingling of melodies and crashing, crescendoing choruses. Duff has perfected that shoegaze rush of adrenalin that is tempered by a dreamy pop veneer: the perfect package:
