Track: Melbourne multi-instrumentalist Kat Greta unveils stunning elegy ‘Farewell My Friend’ that shimmers like stars in the firmament.

We were honoured to premiere Melbourne chanteuse and multi-instrumentalist Kat Greta‘s debut video for the track ‘Let It Go’ last year and her new single “Farewell My Friend’ is an ethereal and haunting elegy that showcases her stunning vocals and songwriting craft.

Greta’s bell-like delivery reminds me of a mix between the legendary Kate Bush and French singer Mylène Farmer with a mere touch of the sadly recently departed Jane Birkin: a crystal clear and velvet tone that is utterly radiant, powerful and yet with a tremble of vulnerability and tristesse. The song is as elegiac as the title suggests – Greta says:

The song was inspired by the untimely passing of…(a) friend from a brain aneurysm during the pandemic. It is about difficult farewells to those who pass through our lives and have a profound, lasting influence on us.

Featuring musicians Charlie Lane on backing vocals and Monica Royal on cello, the dual voices and rich vibrant strings add infinite layers to the melancholy, ethereal delivery – there is a heart-breaking subtle elegance to the track that is imperious as it is personal:

Greta is proving to be a phenomenal talent with a prodigious songwriting craft. ‘Farewell My Friend’ is out now and available to download and stream through the link above and via all usual platforms.
