Track: Maxine Gillon’s ‘Venus of Brunswick East’ is Urban Poetry

Maxine Gillon

Naarm-based musician Maxine Gillon has just dropped a new track ‘Venus of Brunswick East.’ This is her first release since signing with Colossus Records (Girl & Girl) and is available on a 7″ single with a reimagined version of Tim Buckley’s ‘Song to Siren’ on the B side.

This new track marks a significant shift for Maxine, known for her guitar prowess and the ferocious, raw sound that has defined much of her work so far, always underscored by razor-sharp lyrics. But with this release, she leans into a more melodic, indie style, singing about a drive to a medieval fair with her girlfriend—using it as a metaphor for their deepening intimacy. The shimmering guitar work nods to the likes of The Smiths and The Go-Betweens, but it’s all Maxine, reimagining those iconic influences with a modern twist. It’s another brilliant piece from an artist who consistently proves she’s as cerebral as she is sonically daring.
