Americans are different. They have Electoral Colleges and TV programmes which come in seasons, and they have ‘holidays.’ This year. American Lucy Dacus is celebrating these ‘holidays’ through a series of singles. She’s already done Valentine’s Day with a cover of ‘La Vie en Rose,’ (https://youtu.be/ynDeTGUji1I). America celebrates Mother’s Day in May, so now we’re in the run-up to it, Lucy has released a song called ‘My Mother and I’:
The video rightly includes the lyrics, because they deserve close attention. My mother and I explores the complex relationship mothers and daughters have. As women born under the same star sign, they have common values and but they have to forgive and forsake each other to make their own way in life. Lucy examines these themes with real wit and wisdom.
Based on this track, I started checking out Lucy’s back catalogue, and haven’t found a bad song yet. Her work is original, thoughtful, funny, clever. She’s releasing singles for US Independence Day, Springsteen’s Birthday, Halloween, Christmas, and New Year’s. Not even Springsteen looks forward to his birthday any more, but now I’m looking forward to it. That’s how much I like this song.
Dacus is touring the UK in June, and you can get full details of all her dates here: https://lucydacus.com/tourdates/
