Track: Khemet McConville Shares Buoyant & Beautiful New Single ‘Your Mother Said’

RKhemet McConville shares the buoyant, soulful and jiving new single ‘Your Mother Said’.

Known for his work with rap icon Trippie Redd, scoring for brands like Boot Barn and Wrangler Jeans, and producing for major networks like Hallmark Channel, Khemet’s career has been a testament to his dedication to authentic musical expression. ‘Your Mother Said’ is no exception, creating a vibrant, beautifully constructed sound that brings together elements of soul and gospel over a swinging beat and subtle electronic flourishes that brings an alternative, contemporary flair to the sound and a hip-hop undertone.

As comparable to James Brown or the Dap Kings as it is to Michael Kiwanuka and Childish Gambino, the track captures a wonderfully uplifting aura through its bright piano, bopping bass line and jiving, joyous vocal which contrasts against the reflective lyricism. Introducing some excellent saxophone and entering into a muted and emotive final section, the track is at once wonderfully simplistic through its repeated chord progression but also rich and complex through its layered sound pallet.

Speaking about the track, Khemet shares: “The song is a nursery rhyme-esque sing-along with strong gospel overtones. Driven by a punchy yet smooth bass line, and accompanied by Motown-inspired drums, it crescendos before delivering a sobering life lesson in the final verse. I wanted to create something simple enough for kids to sing along to but meaningful enough to resonate with adults, all while delivering a timeline of life lessons.”

A musical prodigy from Pasadena, California, Khemet began his journey early, teaching himself piano in kindergarten before expanding to drums, bass, and vocals. His self-driven passion led him to master audio workstations like GarageBand and Logic in his teen years, and by the age of 17, he had recorded a ten-song demo featuring live instrumentation and vocals, completing the project in just twelve hours.

Described as soulful, eclectic, and idiosyncratic, Khemet’s compositions have drawn attention for their uniqueness and emotional depth. His debut album, a twelve-track release on Bandcamp, highlighted his abilities as a writer, composer, arranger, performer, and engineer.
