It seems like a long while since the convention- blurring techno sound artist Kelly Lee Owens and her eponymous debut bounced into our listening lives. A gorgeous blend of song and electronic rhythms this first album was both dreamy and direct. It delivered infectious dance music with an emotional range- sounds for the head, hands and feet simultaneously.
Well the wait for the next instalment will soon be over as her new project ‘Inner Song’ is set for release on 28th August via the very hip Smalltown Supersound. Originally planned to be out in May, Kelly’s schedule had to be adjusted in response to the current pandemic. So to help us through these unfathomable times she has released a couple of enticing tasters from ‘Inner Song’, first the pulsing techno track ‘Melt’ and now a second helping ‘Night’.
‘Night’ is an intriguing prospect, introduced by layering synth patterns and beats as Owen’s repeated intimate vocal phrases glide over the building waves of sound. The track then transforms, seamlessly picking up momentum with a pumping staccato rhythm to push the song to a close. As with all her music ‘Night’ has a warm human touch that can be a missing dimension from some electronic music. She has said ‘I wanted to release this track as a gift to you during this crazy time, to give a part of my heart to you all’.
Yes, Kelly Lee Owens really does care.
