Capturing all of the anxieties of trust and love in a relationship, the single ‘I Will Never Know (Who’s On Your Mind)’ from producer/songwriter Jonesing (the nom de plume of Rosie Wositzky-Jones formerly singing under the name Rosie Jones) is an achingly beautiful and utterly mesmerising track that is both haunting and moving.
Jonsing’s vocals shimmer and soar – there is a quality redolent of Kate Bush or Massive Attack’s Shara Nelson, while the instrumentation is subtle and lush, bubbling and simmering. A gentle melody is ethereal and uplifting, creating an element of euphoria found in artists like Sigur Ros.
Jonesing says of the track:
I wanted to write something that was a ‘big sing’ and found a tenderness that I haven’t expressed before by stripping back the layers and finely tweaking my vocal control like a dial. This gave me the range to play with the pinch of angst and gape of vulnerability throughout the song. It’s my most heartfelt song yet, and moves from a quiet kind of grief to a thorny acceptance.
The track indeed becomes a palimpsest for deeply felt emotion floating on a bed of synths, with an atmospheric and statuesque presence:
