London duo high jump return with the extended version of the beautiful and atmospheric ‘CLIIAL’, a release complete with a Gone Dolphin Remix (an addictive and danceable remix under their other creative alias).
Mixed by renowned engineer Max Cooke (GoodBooks and Ellie Goulding among others), the new AA-side is an excellent example of high jump’s capabilities. Offer both an extra flourish on the previously released ‘CLIALL’ as well as a fresh take on the track through the vibrant new remix.
Probably the most complete sounding and musically rich cut from the duo’s debut EP ‘001’, ‘CLIIAL’ brings together a rich soundscape of plucky guitars, atmospheric synths and tight beats under the melancholic, delicate falsetto lead vocal. As comparable to Jai Pau’s ‘Jasmine’ as it is to the likes of Jadu Heart and even early Jungle, the single holds such an inviting blend of indie-pop and electronic elements, carrying both a sense of emotion whilst also capturing and alluring ethereal electronic edge. The new extended mix comes complete with an extended, yet understated close as layers of picked guitar and synth elegantly glide the track into the ether through a haze of reverb.
The pulsing remix brings the brightness and airiness of the original whilst concentrating on the experimental, IDM undertones in the track. Re-pitched vocals, deep swells of sub bass and swirls of synth are driven forward by the punching beat, highlighting the pairs proficiency as producers.
Speaking about the release, the duo explains: “CLIIAL was one of the first tracks that Harry wrote for the high jump project, and we’re really excited to now be releasing both the Extended Mix of the song, as well as a remix by Gone Dolphin. CLIIAL stands for ‘Can’t Lose It In A Lifetime’, and lyrically the song found inspiration in the Robin Williams quote: “You’re only given a little spark of madness – you mustn’t lose it”. That mantra repeats throughout the song, and features prominently over the dreamlike outro that closes the longer cut of the song.
The Gone Dolphin remix reflects that notion too; taking inspiration from producers like Frankie Knuckles and Kaytranada and sampling a bunch of early high jump demos to create a quirky collage over a wonky house beat. Inspired by peers including Toro y Moi, Jai Paul, and LA Priest, the original CLIIAL track leans on a combination of slick guitar and vocal interplay, elaborating over an infectious TR-808 backbeat.”
With fresh new material on the horizon in 2025, the duo’s journey continues to bring some inventive and beautifully constructed music.
