London’s rising stars, heavy wild, continue to make waves in the indie music scene with their latest single, ‘Dope Gods’.
Sitting somewhere between Slowdive and Joy Division with a splash of Bombay Bicycle Club for good measure, the track carries an uber-cool aura, with its boxy production and lo-fi essence. A haze of hypnotic synths, distorted lead vocals and shoegaze influenced guitar lines, the result is an atmospheric, otherworldly and yearning soundscape driven by a sense of intensity.
Vocalist Wolfgang Harte’s poignant delivery adds depth to the song’s narrative, particularly as he reflects on the loss of an old friend. With lines like “I can still see you now, with a face like forever”, Harte’s emotive performance is accentuated by the heavy reverb and crackling distortion.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind “Dope Gods”, Harte shares, “I wrote the song on the back of getting the news last January that an old friend had died. We were best friends around the ages of 15-17 and had so many crazy times wrapped up in that period of adolescence.” This personal connection infuses the track with raw emotion, adding an extra layer of depth to its already compelling narrative.
