Signed to the magnificent Brisbane label False Peak Records, French/Czech duo Overland Inn open up their fair doors for the first time since early last year with another swoon-worthy dreamy single entitled ‘Martingale’. As I’ve mentioned before, this duo have taken the ghost of Serge Gainsbourg and wrapped it up in a contemporary cloak of cotton wool and tuneful vocals that out whisper Jane Birkin and float sensuously in the ether.
Arpeggiated synth riffs, slightly wonky and off kilter, glide under the velvet vocals that drift like contrails in the air, high and flighty, liquid and ambulant. It is a grand canvass, filtered with light and ethereal, accompanied by a video that captures the endless expanses in the sounds.
The video is enigmatically accompanied by a quote from Milan Kundera (the famed Czech writer who shares lineage with the band):
La valeur d’un hasard est égale à son degré d’improbabilité (The value of a chance is equal to its degree of improbability.
It portrays an epic journey through bleak landscapes in a filtered light: endless horizons and endless kilometers evoked by the track:
Another exquisite piece of dream pop from this enigmatic band. It might be available through all the usual download and streaming sites – it’s a complete mystery. In the meantime, just enjoy the video.
Overland Inn are couple Chloe Bonet and Etienne Duputie who had taken time off to adjust to a new role as parents, but they are working on new material now. Choette!
