I do love a bit of sneering, posturing guitar driven rock, and Dublin’s Fontaines DC deliver with class. A double A sided single has just been released and the two songs are a heart-pumping, pulse racing shot of attitude-laden adrenaline. Having not come across this band before, I’m an instant fan.
First off is ‘Boys in the Better Land’ – repetitive, hypnotic and poetic that recalls The Stooges veering into Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers with a bottle of whiskey in each hand:
Second track, ‘Chequeless Reckless’ ramps up the punky roots with a droning rhythm section, wild guitars and swaggering, hectoring vocals – recalling, it cannot be denied – the archness of Mark E Smith:
These songs are quite frankly exhilarating. Rock’n’roll guitar-driven swagger that puts a spring in your gait and a sneer on your lips. Available on Feb 23rd on 7″ vinyl and digital platforms.
Fontaines DC are finalising a tour of Ireland and with one gig in the UK, and they would be, I imagine, quite fun gigs to go to:
Fri 2nd March – Derry – Dutch Kills, Mason’s Loft.
Sat 3rd March – Dublin – Button Factory
Wed 7th March – London – The Victoria, Dalston
Fri 30th March – Mayo – Garbo’s – Castlebar.
Fontaines DC are:
Grian Chatten
Conor Deegan III
Carlos O’Connell
Conor Curley
