Track: Efterklang – To A New Day (ft. Sønderjysk Pigekor)

Søren Lynggaard

Efterklang have shared ‘To A New Day’, the fourth single from their forthcoming album, ‘Things We Have In Common’, which will be released on September 27, via City Slang.

The track is dedicated to new life and new beginnings and, like most of the songs on the new album, was written in collaboration with Rune Mølgaard. In addition to Sønderjysk Pigekor, who once more lend their vocals, this track features a lineup of other talented musicians: Hector Tosta (additional arrangement, guitar, percussion), Jarrett Gilgore (alto sax), Mabe Fratti (cello), Damian Dalla Torre (bass clarinet, tenor sax), Christian Balvig (piano, Rhodes, vibraphone), Tatu Rönkkö (drums, percussion), Nils Gröndahl (violin) and Francesco Donadello (mix).

Efterklang vocalist Casper Clausen comments:

“Our first gathering creating ‘Things We Have In Common’ took place in a studio situated deep in the forests of Sealand’s (Denmark) western region. We spent our days jamming on ideas and early song sketches, punctuated by long walks amidst the forest landscape. Each morning brought fresh inspiration, and “To a New Day” emerged as one of these spontaneous creations. There was a pulsating energy to it, a sense of upward momentum that resonated with us. Most of the vocal melodies were crafted that particular morning, with the lyrics and structure evolving gradually.

The song truly came into its own when we returned to Copenhagen recording with a wonderful lineup of musicians. Hector Tosta’s immediate response to the song was these beautiful decorative melodies and arrangements injected a new dimension into the track, reminiscent of orchestral Beach Boys albums. It was as if the song had been yearning for this warm, playful energy, a Venezuelan soul to breathe new life into it, unbeknownst to us.

While compling the final playlist for “Things We Have in Common,” this song kinda felt like a step away from the rest of the songs and therefore the perfect outlier to conclude the album. Many friends have remarked that “To a New Day” embodies the quintessential Efterklang sound of the album, whatever that may entail.”

Vocal led subtle, joyful, airy folk to add a splash of calmness to a busy day or tranquillity to an already chilled day. Its dreamy vocal harmonies and gentle bursts of instrumentation are good for the soul and mind as the band gently bathes the listener in their well-crafted comfortable bed of noise.
