Track: Doves return with brilliant new single “Cold Dreaming”

Doves continue to age like fine wine, with their latest single, “Cold Dreaming,” demonstrating a band still creating vibrant and memorable songs. Drawn from their upcoming album Constellations For The Lonely (out February 14, 2025, via EMI North), the track combines elements of psych-soul and indie rock with a lush, cinematic flair.

From the outset, “Cold Dreaming” envelops the listener in a warm, golden hue, courtesy of swirling strings, rich harmonies, and a melody as memorable as anything in the Doves’ storied discography. The chorus ebbs and flows with a tidal force, carrying the listener along its emotional currents. It’s a song that finds beauty in its complexity, reflecting the band’s deep love for the golden era of psychedelic soul, with nods to legends like Charles Stepney and David Axelrod.

Lyrically, the song delves into themes of forgiveness and resilience. As Andy Williams explains, “‘Cold Dreaming’ is a song about forgiveness. Trying to forgive and move on… Perhaps the lyrics do touch a bit on what we’ve been through.”

The single offers yet another window into the expansive, widescreen soundscape of Constellations For The Lonely, an album crafted over three years across locations in Greater Manchester, North Wales, and Cheshire.

For fans lucky enough to secure tickets, the band’s largely sold-out UK tour begins this February, with highlights including two nights at Manchester’s Aviva Studios and an appearance at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Remaining tickets are limited and can be found at www.dovesofficial.com.

Doves have always had a knack for balancing bittersweet introspection with triumphant, anthemic melodies. With “Cold Dreaming,” they reaffirm their place as one of the most consistent and captivating acts in British music today.
