‘This Road’ is the debut album from Denise Sherwood, out on her father Adrians On-U label. From it she’s released a new single ‘Let Me In’, taken from the record – which incidentally features contributions from Adrian, but also Lee “Scratch” Perry, Mala, Mark Stewart, Skip McDonald, Doug Wimbish and drums by the late Style Scott, who the singer lovingly recalls as my “my beautiful uncle.”
Describing ‘Let Me In’ as being “about several people I felt disconnected to at the time, but really wanted a closeness with”, it has this rare beauty about it, with the strings and cello providing a contrast with the electronics and drum shuffle, it’s could almost be something from Portishead’s Dummy (yeah, it’s that good) at Denise’s vocal wraps it’s persuasive, soulful sound around your ears, and sticks with you.
