Creep Show are the project of acclaimed singer-songwriter John Grant and the dark analogue trio of Wrangler (itself a project of Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire, Phil Winter and Benge), and ahead of their debut album – Mr. Dynamite, out on 16th March via Bella Union, they’ve released a new track ‘Modern Parenting’.
The adventurous nature of the group is summed up by the interplay between the two vocalists, Grant and Mallinder, who switch between oblique wordplay to sinister humor as Phil Winter and Benge man-handle the machines. “Creep Show is Hydra,’ says Mallinder of the band. ‘A beast with multiple heads and voices, so no one is quite sure who is saying and doing what. Everything is permitted and everything is possible.’ Grant: “I do like theatre of the absurd and some of it is that, but most of it is just having fun. We did a lot of laughing and just had a blast doing it.”
Modern Parenting is a veritable feast of tumbling synth/electronics and squelchy bass. Grants vocal is as glorious as ever as the band mix up the experimental with the retro with straight ahead pop music. Mallinders interventions are much more clipped but no less important to the whole. It’s a fascinating and brilliant world, this creep show.
