Out on beautiful 7inch vinyl on April 30th is a lost Mod classic from label favourites Makin’ Time. It comes from former Stiff Records subsidiary Countdown Records – now with hello from Acid Jazz Records, and remained unreleased through its lineup changes and when Stiff ushered the band towards on a more chart-friendly path.
Produced by The Truth and 9 Below Zero’s Dennis Greaves and Mick Lister, this was due to be the bands debut single from Countdown. It features the Fay Hallam composed honey on one side with the bands Martin Blunt (who went on to found The Charlatans) composed ‘Take What You Can Get’ on the other.
It’s a bubbling, organ heavy slice of mod-soul, the mix of vocals intertwining as it propels itself forward. It’s got the kind of Northern influenced melodies that would have you shuffling in your bowling shows, and it a important marker in why Makin’ Time were so revered on the Acid Jazz scene.
