Nottingham-based newcomers Commons make an explosive, exhilarating debut with the new single ‘Queen Of Hearts’. Brining together alternative rock with moments of atmospheric indie bliss, the track offers a first taste of the bands upcoming debut EP, Clean Living, slated for release on May 24th.
A distinct, layered indie rock sound, sprinkled with electronic flourishes, Queen Of Hearts introduces a sonic approach comparable to the likes of Foals and Kasabian. Opening with a reverb-soaked synth chord sequence, the track gradually builds as intertwining guitar lines enter before the track explodes into it’s driving verse. Punching drums and distorted tones underpin the urgent vocal delivery that soon shifts into an ethereal falsetto, and the instrumental enters a drifting, psychedelic mid section.
Moving through its shifts in mood and tempo, the track closes on a fittingly wide, and engulfing final chorus surrounded by atmospheric reverbs and fuzzy guitar tones.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Queen Of Hearts’, the band shares, “The song Queen Of Hearts at its core is a song about a ‘man eater’ of a woman who doesn’t care whose hearts she breaks, as long as she eventually gets what she wants.”
Having already mesmerised audiences, including a sold-out show at Beat The Streets Festival in January, Commons have already established themselves as a live band. With upcoming live dates, including a headline show at Rough Trade Nottingham on June 8th, Commons are poised to explode onto the scene.
