At the end of last week, critically lauded South London math rockers black midi weighed into the ongoing diss track war between ‘godfather of grime’ Wiley, grime superstar of the moment Stormzy, and the latter’s collaborator Ed Sheeran by dropping their own diss track specifically targeting Sheeran. The band uploaded it to their Soundcloud page then deleted it immediately afterwards, but not before one enterprising young wag (who may or may not be a bot) known only as 😀 posted it to YouTube.
The song, ‘ded sheeran (ed sheeran send) part 1’, features the band’s talented drummer Morgan Simpson’s vocal debut. He croons bon mots like “Ed Sheeran sucks/You sellout ginger prick … My name’s Ed Sheeran/Look at me in my jeans and white T-shirt with my acoustic guitar … Fuck you man … Remember that time at The Windmill when you took my shit?/When you took my drumsticks?”
According to DIY, the original Soundcloud post was accompanied by the message “new album out 250120”. Musically, the song represents a complete departure from the tense, angular math rock of the band’s acclaimed debut album ‘Schlagenheim’ and primarily consists of an array of synths and samples.
