Black Grape, the swaggering Manchester band headed up by Shaun Ryder and Kermit (aka Paul Leveridge) return with a new album ‘Orange Head’ out on November 3rd via DGAFF Recordings. It’s preceded by a rinew single ‘Milk’ thats out now.
Right from the off Black Grape we’re a no brainier for me. I’d loved the Happy Mondays and Ruthless Rap Assassins in equal measure, so a meeting of musical minds (I reckoned at least) was always going to bear fruit. So it proved with hit singles and albums in the mid 90s, before a hiatus effectively ended by tours in 2015 onwards and the comeback third album, Pop Voodoo, released in 2017.
New single ‘Milk’ blasts along, with this driving, edgy bassline and big beat backing over which both Kermit and Ryder flow and deliver this singalong chorus, to match these.shout along moments which will no doubt translate incredibly well to the live stage. These two know what they’re doing in dropping elements that will work the crowds. It’s more than that though, with both possessing a talent for storytelling and true live, often amusing, observations.
