After a lifetime in music, Barry Adamson has announced details of a new six tracks EP Love Sick Dick, which drops on 14th April. From it, he’s released a new track, Sweet Misery, which Mark Radcliffe premiered on his 6Music Show. The whole EP Adamson sees as a blues – one lovelorn guy in all of his downhearted, paranoiac, grieving, hapless and helpless self. To quote Adamson, on the EP: ‘The blues is the blues and if the heart aches then that’s the sound that will come out whether you are playing guitar, a synth, a piano or playing futuristic guitar solos on your iphone!’
Sweet Misery starts off with this bluesy riff, only to unravel with swathes of guitar sound and this rough edged accompaniment. It’s got this seering eletro bassline that ploughs through the song, but there’s splashes of synth chords and a classic pop melody to sweeten things up. There’s a hint of the Thin Lizzy’s about proceedings, this swashbuckling guitar solo and Adamson’s vocal adding to the oeuvre as he sums up, well, misery and where he (the EP’s central character) is.
