Essentially the project of trumpet player, producer and ethnomusicologist Will Magid, Balkan Bump has already made waves, pulling in superstar collaborators such as Gramatik and Talib Kweli, and fusing them with his Balkan brass an beats. He wrote the track after meeting Talib Kweli when they were playing alongside Pretty Lights on The Conan O’Brien show. It was then presented to Gramatik who loved it so much he wanted to put his own spin on it. Now he’s signed to Gramatik’s label Lowtemps to release Balkan Bumps EP. Taken from it is the original version of Aymo – pre Gramatik. It’s has this self assured swagger about it, not least because Talib is there to drop his magic lyrical fairy dust all over it, as it canters along spewing out brass heavy eastern riffs between the verses. It’s brilliant stuff.
