South African visionary jazz drummer Asher Gamedze has released a new track, Interregnum, from his forthcoming album Dialetic Soul, out on On The Corner Records on July 10th.
The album was recorded live over a period of two days, with Gamedze surrounding himself with renowned musicians – Thembinkosi Mavimbela on bass, Buddy Wells on Tengo Sax, Robin Fassie-Kock on Trumpet and Nono Nkoane on vocals. Looking at making a progressive form of Spiritual Jazz, Gamedze says of the album ‘Dialectic Soul is about motion and a refusal to remain static or stay still. It’s the commitment to be continually moving’
Part spoken word, part jazz piece, Interregnum (named after the word for the period of time when normal Government is suspended) bubbles away with this slightly psychedelic feeling, hypnotic beats with added soul from the breathy, at times almost drone like Saxophone, and glitter with added percussion. It’s quite something.
