African Head Charge, the combination of master percussionist Bongo Iyabinghi Noah and the maverick that is famed UK dub producer Adrian Sherwood, have been the subject of a reissue campaign since 2016. The latest release in the series sees an expanded editions of their 1990 masterpiece ‘Songs of Praise’, and 1993’s ‘In Pursuit Of Shashamane Land’., while 2005’s ‘Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa’ and 2011’s ‘Voodoo Of The Godsent’ are pressed to vinyl for the first time. In addition, companion pieces ‘Return Of The Crocodile’, an LP of early rarities, and ‘Churchical Chant Of The Iyabinghi’ which compiles alternate mixes and dubs from 1990 -1993 are also being released. All are available through Sherwoods iconic On-U Sound label.
As part of the reissue programme, African Head Charge have released a previously unreleased track, Peace and Happiness, lifted from ‘Churchical Chant Of The Iyabinghi’. It’s a dark slab of fluid chords, dubby bass lines, this almost angelic harmonised vocal, and a lot of afro-drumming. It’s quite something.
