IT’S BEEN quite the year for LA’s South Korean rapper 박혜진 Park Hye Jin, who’s been dropping coolly sophisticated breaks right the way across the twelvemonth.
Check her recent retake on “CALL ME” with Blood Orange; intelligent textures and an effortless shuffle, haunting piano, yearning lyrics.
Then there was the How can I EP for Ninja, the title track from which went for a spin through dusk ambience and spatial arrangement which lifted it way above the normal run of young producers.
“CLOUDS”, which you can hear below, is the fruits of a session with fellow adopted Angelino Nosaj Thing, and has that characteristic breathy understatement in her vocals, with just a little bite, married with gliding, downbeat IDM.
With artists such as Jockstrap, HAAi and Becky and the Birds out there exploring and creating, we can at least be sure that the leading edge of electronic music is going into 2021 with its A-game.
