I caught エミエミ emi emi at a recent gig at Altar, Hobart for a showcase of new and upcoming bands in the local Hobart area and was blown away by her performance, writing she was:
…a mix of J-Pop/K-Pop with a Balearic flavour – a touch of thumping House and disco…It was like a blend of Hello Kitty and M83, and Emi Emi’s performance was intoxicating and fun, carefree and joyous.
エミエミ emi emi has now released a new single entitled ‘ngu’ and it is as joyous and expansive as her live performance. With a sprightly effervescent pace and sonic equivalent of a day-glo brilliance, there is such an uplifting tone it should be prescribed by medics to lift the most downtrodden heart.
Indeed, there is a J-PopK-Pop radiance but elements of bands like Alvvays in the mix – a heady cocktail of sheer exuberance with a strain of yearning and melancholy throughout, sung in Japanese. エミエミ emi emi is producing something that is really quite unique and that warms the heart in the chilly Antarctic climes of wild lutruwita/Tasmania, at the edge of the world.
‘ngu’ is out now and available to download and stream here. You can see the premiere of the video here shortly:
