Lewisham MC is becoming something of a grime torchbearer, talking up the scene to just about anyone of influence that will listen. More than that this ugh, he’s also becoming one of its most important protagonists as new single Freeze demonstrates, taken from his forthcoming Grime Street EP, out on June 7th via DMY
Of the Terror Danjah produced track, Yizzy says: “Terror Danjah sent me the riddim one afternoon and all he said was “I got one” – from then I knew the track was gonna be mad. I sat on the riddim for a while tryna work out how to approach it because it doesn’t exactly sound like your typical grime riddim, so I didn’t wanna attack the riddim the same way I usually would. In the end I decided to go for a slightly more relaxed tone compared to most of my other songs. I mixed that tone with some on the Patois style of barring that I do from time to time and BOOM next thing you know you’ve got Freeze.”
its built on this Hughes soundings bare brass(y) chords that give the track its dark and menacingly ambience. Over the top though is Yizzys flow a small he mixes it up with his aforementioned Patois and Londonisms, as he lays down his smart rhymes and biting lyrics.
Cartoonist Adsapaps has creating a brilliantly animation for the video. Check it out, here
