“Punk ain’t no religious cult – Punk means thinking for yourself!”
And so begins a single that for many spells out the true meaning of Punk.
We are of course talking about seminal hardcore punk band The Dead Kennedys single ‘Nazi Punks Fuck Off!’ It was the must have single at the time and still has pride of place on the ‘shelf saved for the best stuff’ at Backseat Mafia Towers.
Formed in California in 1978 The Dead Kennedy’s soon stood out from their contemporaries. Their first single “California Uber Alles” a mix of satirical, staunch socio-political lyrics that spoke out against the Reagan administration and corporate America put them firmly at the forefront of the ‘80’s American hardcore scene.
Whether it be disrupting music awards, allegedly distributing ‘harmful matter to minors’ or their overtly political lyrics and actions, The Dead Kennendy’s were never far from controversy. Building up a solid following at home in the US it wasn’t long that they became the first US hardcore band to be accepted in the UK, their distinctive DK logo, appearing on the jackets of punks all over the world.
They are definitely one of the most influential bands of all time and this month after just completing a tour of America, the Dead Kennedy’s are set to play a few intimate shows in the UK. Gigs in Newcastle and Sheffield have been arranged for a while, and today the band announced that they are adding one more show in Oxford on August the 15th…
