He’s been busy, that Steven Black, aka Sweet Baboo. The Welsh troubadour has just released his new album, The Boombox Ballads, and recently played no less than five times at Green Man Festival. Clearly not one for resting on his laurels, he has a new single ‘Walking in the Rain’, out on October 23rd and ahead of that he’s revealed a new video for the song and a whole host of UK dates through the second half of September and into October.
The song has this almost country rock and roll lilt about it, with there’s a pure ends about Blacks voice that allows it to gently wash over you. Add to it the words, and there’s and innocence, a childlike quality about it that makes it rather special. It’s almost as if you sanded all the rough edges off Richard Hawley, stripped it back and injected it with sugar and spice and, well, you know.
Watch the new video directed by Leo Nicholson and Natasha Harrison (Rastamouse) below. Created in cutout animation and inspired by the Wizard of Oz, Black is drawn into a world of umbrellas and some strange new friends.
Taken from the recent acclaimed album The Boombox Ballads, ‘Walking In The Rain’ will be released on Oct 23rd. Catch him live
